Morgaon has long been considered the starting and ending point of the traditional Ashtavinayak pilgrimage sequence, with the temple's inner sanctum notably built by the Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar, connecting it to her broader legacy of Hindu temple patronage.
The temple features four gates facing four directions with the main entrance north-facing, two tall lamp towers (deepmalas) in the courtyard, and an unusual sculpture of Nandi facing Ganesha — Nandi typically appears only at Shiva temples, making this a distinctive architectural detail.
Ganesha is said to have ridden a peacock (mayura) to slay the demon Sindhu in response to the gods' pleas — giving the deity the name Mayureshwara here. The idol has its trunk turned left with a protective cobra poised above it, and two smaller murtis of Riddhi and Siddhi accompany the main deity.
