One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, distinctive for its unusual Jyotirlinga form — three small lingas representing Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva together within a single sanctum — and for standing at the source of the sacred Godavari river.
The current temple structure was substantially built in the 18th century under Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao, replacing an earlier structure, and the site has long been significant as the source of the Godavari, one of India's most important rivers, particularly for peninsular India.
A temple built in black stone in an elaborate Nagara style, with detailed carving reflecting its 18th-century Peshwa-era construction, considered one of the finest examples of that period's temple architecture in the region.
Trimbakeshwar's name and unusual triple-linga form (Tri-Ambak, "three eyes" or three deities) distinguish it from every other Jyotirlinga, and its status as the source of the Godavari river ties it to Nashik's broader significance as a site of the Kumbh Mela, one of Hinduism's largest periodic gatherings.
