Carved entirely from a single stone hillside, the temple features a wide supporting-pillar-free hall roughly 53 by 51 feet, with the idol carved directly into the cave wall — making it immovable, unlike the freestanding murtis at other Ashtavinayak temples.
Girijatmaj, meaning "son of Girija (Parvati)," reflects the legend that Parvati performed penance at this specific site to be blessed with Ganesha as her son — distinguishing this temple's devotional focus on divine motherhood and the mother-son bond between Parvati and Ganesha.
