The original temple was a small structure built in 1801 by Laxman Vithu and Deubai Patil, a local couple, on this then-marshy plot of land. It remained a modest neighbourhood shrine for over a century before growing dramatically in popularity through the 20th century, particularly from the 1990s onward, evolving into one of Mumbai's most significant landmarks and one of the richest temple trusts in India.
The current temple structure, substantially rebuilt and expanded in phases through the 20th and early 21st centuries, follows a broadly Nagara-influenced design with a prominent golden dome (mandapam) added during renovation, giving the temple its now-iconic silhouette on the Mumbai skyline.
The temple's name, Siddhivinayak, refers to Ganesha as the bestower of siddhi (spiritual power/success) and buddhi (wisdom) — the deity here is depicted with the trunk turned to the right, a form considered more powerful and traditionally requiring stricter ritual observance than the more common left-turned depiction.
