The twelfth and final Jyotirlinga in the traditional list, standing near the world-famous Ellora Caves, with the current temple structure rebuilt in the 18th century by Ahilyabai Holkar.
The present temple was substantially rebuilt in the late 18th century under the patronage of the Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar, who was responsible for restoring and rebuilding numerous significant Hindu temples across India during her reign, including this one and several other prominent sites.
A temple built in red volcanic rock in a Nagara style, standing near the far larger and internationally significant Ellora Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing extensive rock-cut Buddhist, Hindu and Jain monuments.
Grishneshwar (also called Ghrishneshwar) completes the traditional list of twelve Jyotirlingas, and local legend ties the site to a devotee named Kusuma whose deep faith and the miraculous restoration of her son led to Shiva manifesting here as this Jyotirlinga.
