The temple faces east, and local tradition holds that an original, far more elaborate idol — described as having ten trunks and twenty arms — remains hidden in a basement beneath the temple, shown only on special occasions, with the publicly visible idol being a more modest representation.
Tradition holds that Shiva invoked this powerful Mahaganapati form of Ganesha before his battle against the demon Tripurasura, seeking his blessing and strength before that significant cosmic conflict — giving this temple its association with the most potent and powerful form of Ganesha among all eight Ashtavinayak murtis.
