While cave shrines to the Goddess in this region have long histories, Vaishno Devi's rise as one of India's most visited pilgrimage sites accelerated substantially in the late 20th century with major infrastructure development, culminating in the establishment of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board in 1986 to manage the pilgrimage. The trek route, facilities, and access have been steadily expanded since.
The shrine itself is a natural cave, with the Goddess worshipped in the form of three pindis (rock formations) representing Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati, rather than a carved idol. The approach path and Bhawan complex have been developed with modern pilgrim infrastructure — battery car and helicopter options, resting points, and langar halls — layered onto the mountain trek.
Vaishno Devi is worshipped as a form of the Goddess who, in popular tradition, took human birth as a devotee of Rama and undertook long penance in these hills. She is said to have battled and ultimately defeated the demon Bhairon Nath near the cave, whose shrine (Bhairon Temple) is also visited as part of the pilgrimage, generally after Bhawan darshan.
