A Dravidian masterpiece with 14 towering gopurams, dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar.
The present structure was largely built during the 16th and 17th centuries under the Nayak rulers, especially Thirumalai Nayak, though the site's sacred history is far older.
Famous for its 14 ornately sculpted gopurams and the Hall of a Thousand Pillars, each pillar carved with intricate mythological figures.
The temple celebrates the divine marriage of Meenakshi (a form of Parvati) to Sundareswarar (a form of Shiva), a story re-enacted annually during the Chithirai Festival.
