One of the most important Shakti Peethas, set atop the Nilachal Hills in Guwahati, and the centre of the distinctive Ambubachi Mela β a festival marking the Goddess's annual menstruation cycle.
The present temple was rebuilt in the 16th century by the Koch king Naranarayana, after an earlier structure was destroyed, though the site's significance as a centre of Shakti and Tantric worship is considerably older, referenced in early medieval texts. Kamakhya has long been one of the most significant centres of Tantric practice in the Indian subcontinent.
The temple's beehive-shaped shikhara is a distinctive regional variant, differing visibly from both Dravidian and typical Nagara forms elsewhere in India, reflecting Assam's distinct temple-building tradition. There is no idol in the sanctum; the Goddess is worshipped in the form of a yoni-shaped rock cleft, kept perpetually moist by a natural spring.
Kamakhya is one of the 51 (or in some tellings 108) Shakti Peethas, sites where parts of Sati's body are believed to have fallen after Shiva carried her corpse in grief; this site is associated with her yoni (womb/genitals), making it uniquely significant in Shakti worship and central to the Ambubachi Mela, which honours the Goddess's generative, fertile aspect.
