Set dramatically on the Nallamala hills above the Krishna river, the temple complex features substantial fortification walls and a Dravidian architectural style, with the presiding Jyotirlinga housed within a richly sculpted sanctum.
Mallikarjuna is described in Puranic tradition as one of the twelve self-manifested (Swayambhu) forms of Shiva's light — the name combines Mallika (jasmine, associated with Parvati) and Arjuna (a name for Shiva as bright as the sun), reflecting the union of Shiva and Parvati at this site, which is also revered as Bhramaramba Devi within Shakta tradition.
