The final Divya Desam documented in this project, and the only one in Andhra Pradesh dedicated to Narasimha specifically β a complex of nine distinct shrines across the Nallamala hills, each marking a different aspect of this fierce avatar.
Ahobilam has ancient roots as one of the most significant Narasimha pilgrimage sites in India, with a complex of nine temples (the Nava Narasimha) developed across the Nallamala hill range, reflecting centuries of continuous devotion to this specific avatar of Vishnu.
A complex of nine distinct shrines spread across the Nallamala hills, split between a more accessible lower temple (Diguva Ahobilam) and a more remote upper temple (Eguva Ahobilam) reached via a more demanding forest and hill route.
Ahobilam is traditionally regarded as the site where Vishnu, in his Narasimha (man-lion) form, emerged from a pillar to destroy the demon king Hiranyakashipu β the name "Ahobilam" itself is said to derive from the exclamation "Ahobala" (what strength/wonder) uttered by the gods witnessing Narasimha's ferocious emergence.
