Yadagirigutta, now officially rebranded Yadadri, is a genuinely rare kind of temple even within a country full of significant ones: a Swayambhu kshetra, where the deity is understood to have manifested entirely on his own rather than being consecrated by any king or sage's installation — and, on top of that ancient claim, a temple that has just undergone one of the most ambitious modern reconstructions anywhere in South India, transforming a modest hilltop cave shrine into what's now described as a world-class spiritual complex. The temple centers on Narasimha, Vishnu's fierce man-lion avatar, worshipped here in FIVE distinct forms simultaneously — Jwala, Yogananda, Ugra, Gandaberunda and Lakshmi Narasimha — giving the site its formal name, Pancha Narasimha Kshetra, and making it one of the very few places in India where a single temple houses this complete five-form set together. The golden Sudarshana Chakra crowning the sanctum roof is visible from several kilometers away and has long been treated as a literal beacon guiding pilgrims toward the hill, with local tradition holding that the chakra has, on rare occasions, been seen to turn on its own.

The temple's documented history stretches back to at least the 13th century, though its own tradition places its true origin far earlier, in the Treta Yuga, tied to the penance of the sage Yadarishi. In recent years, the Telangana state government undertook a major redevelopment of the entire complex, substantially expanding it while working to preserve the sanctity of the original cave shrine at its heart.

Built substantially in Dravidian style following the recent large-scale redevelopment, the temple's sanctum remains centered on the original cave, with the complex now extending into a considerably larger, more elaborate structure across the hillside.

Sage Yadarishi, son of the sage Rishyasringa, performed intense penance on this hill seeking Narasimha's darshan; pleased by his devotion, Narasimha appeared to him in five distinct forms — Jwala, Yogananda, Ugra, Gandaberunda and Lakshmi Narasimha — and agreed to remain on the hill permanently in these forms to bless all who sought him, giving the site its name (Yadagiri, "the hill of Yada") and its formal identity as Pancha Narasimha Kshetra.
