One of the most significant Divya Desams, and among the most important Vishnu temples in South India — the site closely associated with Ramanuja, the towering figure of Vishishtadvaita Vedanta philosophy.
The temple has a long and well-documented history spanning the Pallava, Chola, and especially Vijayanagara periods, when much of the current large complex — including its striking 100-pillared hall — took shape. Ramanuja, the influential 11th-12th century philosopher-theologian, is closely associated with this temple and is honoured within its precincts.
The temple complex is vast, with a prominent hill-shrine (Atthigiri) referenced in its traditional name, elaborate gopurams, and the celebrated 100-pillared mandapa built in the Vijayanagara period, richly carved with equestrian figures typical of that era's temple architecture.
Perundevi Thayar, the temple's goddess, is one of the most venerated goddess forms among the Divya Desams. The temple's processional deity is ceremonially submerged in a temple tank and revealed only once every 40 years, an unusual and closely watched tradition known as the Athi Varadar festival, which last drew enormous crowds in 2019.
