One of the 108 Divya Desams and among the most significant Vaishnava sites in India, revered as the birthplace of Rama, with a newly consecrated temple that opened to devotees in January 2024 after a long and widely followed period of construction.
Ayodhya's sanctity as Rama's birthplace is referenced across ancient Hindu literature and has been a site of pilgrimage and worship for many centuries. Following a prolonged and much-publicised legal and social history through the 20th and early 21st centuries, culminating in a 2019 Supreme Court judgment, construction of the current Ram Mandir began in 2020, with the sanctum consecrated (Pran Pratishtha) in January 2024, and the temple opened to devotees while construction of the wider complex continued in phases.
The temple is built in the traditional Nagara style of North Indian temple architecture, with a large, ornately carved stone structure planned across multiple storeys. The wider complex is being developed over several years, including additional shrines and pilgrim facilities beyond the main sanctum.
Ayodhya is revered in the Ramayana as Rama's birthplace and the capital from which he ruled as the ideal king, embodying the concept of Ram Rajya — righteous governance. The site is regarded as one of Hinduism's seven most sacred cities (Sapta Puri).
