The present temple structure is generally dated to around the 15th-16th century CE, though the site's sanctity as Krishna's capital is far older in tradition, and some form of shrine is believed to have existed here for many centuries prior. Dwarka is one of the Sapta Puri, the seven cities considered holiest in Hindu tradition, and has long been closely associated with the Pushtimarg and other Vaishnava traditions, with Adi Shankaracharya credited with establishing one of his four principal mathas here.
The temple rises five storeys over 72 pillars, built largely of limestone and sand, in a style showing Chalukyan influence typical of Gujarat and Rajasthan temple architecture of this period. Its shikhara reaches roughly 78 metres, topped with a flag that is changed multiple times a day and is visible from a considerable distance.
Dwarka is held to be the city Krishna built and ruled after leaving Mathura, described extensively in the Mahabharata and Puranic literature as a magnificent capital that was submerged by the sea after Krishna's departure from the world. Marine archaeological surveys off the coast here have been a subject of ongoing interest and discussion in relation to this tradition.
