Anyone who has followed this project's Divya Desam entries has already visited Chidambaram once before, without quite realising the full picture — the Govindaraja Perumal shrine documented in that earlier work sits inside this very temple complex, one small Vishnu shrine within a vastly larger Shiva monument that ranks among the most philosophically significant temples in all of Tamil Nadu. Chidambaram is one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, five temples representing the five classical elements, and specifically represents akasha — space or ether, the most abstract and least physically representable of the five. That abstraction is expressed here in a genuinely startling way: the temple's innermost sanctum, the Chit Sabha, contains no visible idol at all in its most sacred spot, represented instead by empty space behind a curtain — a literal, architectural manifestation of the formless divine that has no real parallel among any other major Shiva temple in India. Alongside this, the temple houses the celebrated Nataraja form, Shiva as cosmic dancer, considered one of the most significant depictions of this specific iconography anywhere in Hindu art, and the wider Dravidian complex includes towering gopurams intricately carved with the 108 karanas, the fundamental dance postures codified in classical Bharatanatyam — making this temple as significant to India's classical dance tradition as to Shaiva theology.
