Akshardham stands apart from almost every other temple in this entire project for one simple reason: it is not ancient at all, having opened in 2005, and yet within a few years of its completion it earned a place in the Guinness World Records as the world's largest comprehensive Hindu temple complex — proof that monumental religious architecture in India is very much a living, ongoing tradition rather than something confined to the medieval and ancient past. Built by the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) and dedicated to Bhagwan Swaminarayan, the complex was constructed without any steel reinforcement at all — a deliberate choice reflecting traditional stone-craft techniques scaled up to an extraordinary modern degree, carved by thousands of artisans working over an intensive five-year construction period. Beyond the central monument, Akshardham functions as something closer to a full cultural and educational campus than a conventional temple: an exhibition hall on Swaminarayan's life, a large-scale boat ride through five thousand years of Indian civilisation, a musical fountain show, and meticulously maintained gardens surround the main structure, meaning a visit here is measured in hours rather than the shorter darshan window typical of most temples in this project.
